Doreen, Thanks for the input. I hadn't thought about insufficient light.
In our blazing desert sun the problem usually is too much sun. But it is
something to think about. The Early Sunglow is about 4 feet tall and the
Breeder's choice about 5 feet so the light-size-spacing considerations
didn't appear to apply for these. But it probably was a factor for the
Country Gentleman because the plants are uncommonly tall and we know plants
will grow toward the light.

As a side issue, when the plants were about 12-18 inches tall, I laid out 8,
8-foot lengths of (64 feet total) of 20 gph/100 ft T-Tape, applied 3-4
inches of mulch, set a timer to water for 3 hours twice per week and left
for an autumn color (leaf peeping) and Early American historical tour of
upstate NY, lower Canada and the New England states. When we returned 4
weeks later everything looked great and the Early Sunglow was at its prime -
ready to harvest. Pretty low maintenance. If you work through the
arithmetic, the irrigation was equivalent to 1.2 inches of water per week
and it appeared to be more than necessary because the soil was very moist
but the earth worms seem to like it. I would like to know if anybody any has
an idea of typical rainfall needed for successful corn in areas where
supplemental irrigation is not needed. Meanwhile, I plan to try several
different watering schedules next year.

appear to be a factor for those. But
