Re: Cold Frame Ideas

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi,

Here's a simple "halfpipe" coldframe a friend of my uses for winter veggies,
using corrugated greenhouse fibreglass panels (that wavy stuff). Depending
on the size (width and height) of coldframe he wants he cuts the 4x8' sheet
of fibreglass into two 2x8' pieces or leaves it whole. Then he makes two
triangles out of 1x2" inch lumber, and these will make the ends. The exact
proportions for these I can't say, and it really depends on what profile you
want the finished halfpipe coldframe to take - tall and narrow or short and
wide. You can draw it's profile out on a piece of paper to figure the
exact lengths to make the end triangle pieces. Anyway, these triangles are
fastened on to the ends of the fibreglass with wood screws, making a nice
long tunnel that is lightweight and easy to move. You can of course make
the tunnels shorter to fit you needs. Because it's so light you may want
to weigh it down if in a windy location. He covers up his fall sown crops
with these tunnels and lifts them through the winter to access lettuce, kale,
etc., and says he can harvest food all winter with these, despite being in
snow country.

Cheers!
