Re: slug problem?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I had a problem with snails and slugs, and the copper trick worked like a
charm. I just stripped some copper wiring (used for electrical wiring
inside a house) and staked it out around each garden square. Never a snail
or slug crossed it all season. The slime from snails and slugs is supposed
to have a chemical reaction with copper, and it shocks them.

I used the copper wiring because it was here in my home already (My husband
is a building contractor). But if I had bought it, the cost would have been
about 20 cents. (I have only 2 squares). The tricky thing is, after you
stake it out, is to make sure that it is very close to the ground (so that a
snail or slug can't go under it) and to keep all bits of soil or leaves off
of it (so that the snails or slugs can't use it as a bridge OVER the
copper.)

BTW, my sister has had problems with snails climbing the sides of her house
(from the shrubbery, we presume) when it is rainy. She took thin copper
pipe, and ran it at about 2" above the soil line all of the way around the
house, and voila! nary a snail to be seen.

Hope this is of some use!
