Gardens Alive offers a product that seems to kill snails and slugs and
little else. It is labeled for use around vegetables. The lethal
ingredient is iron phosphate. The safety label is CAUTION (as it is for
b.t. for example)

I have tried it this year, but not extensively. Seems to work very well
in my limited experience.
