Winged ants or worse??

Although in a flower bed, not a sq.ft. plot, I
have found brown ant-like insects and some have long silvery sings (twice their
body length). They seem to be working around a tunnel at the base of a
young iris sprout. Haven't seen any of the winged ones fly. They are
about two feet away from the house foundation and are not near any wood that I
can detect (bed is surrounded by brick and concrete. What to do? Hot
water?? Any ideas?
