Try putting out some dishes of water for the squirrels.  Many times they take 
big hunks out of the tomatoes when they are thirsty.  I have no squirrels but 
I have lots of slugs here so I pick my tomatoes when they start turning 
color.  I have to watch the Green when Ripe ones tho.
