I'm in zone 6 (or 5 on some charts) and I have never mulched my
strawberries. I didn't know they had to be mulched. I've never had a
problem. My strawberries in one of my square foot gardens are 5 years
old and still growing like babies. During the winter, they look *dead*
but start growing vigorously in the early spring; almost before anything
else.
This has been my experience. YMMV.
