A good place to check is fairgrounds. I for one obtained a LOT of
free animal poop from the local county fairgrounds. T'was horse, llama,
goat, sheep...you name it, all mixed in with bedding. Go either right
before or immediately after a given event (the fair itself is a good
bet), and ask nicely at whatever office there is, and they'll
likely let you have as much as you want. I think virtually every
county in the USA that has any agriculture has a county fair...so,
you might have to drive a ways to get the stuff if you live in
Orange County or somesuch, but it's well worth the trouble.
Incidentally, if you're transporting the stuff by car, I find that
12-18 gallon Rubbermaid-type bins (with lids, ya know) are great
for packing it into. They're just about the right size to fit into
the average car's trunk. Make sure you have help - all that poop can
get heavy. If you shop wisely, you can get the bins for $6-8 each
at Wal-Mart or similar places Wash 'em out, and you can store yer
garden stuff in them, too.
If you lack a county/state fairgrounds nearby, try stables and
animal farms (there's no shortage of them in SoCal) - they always
have animal poop on hand. Aren't there stables in Griffith Park?
