I just moved from Florida after 5 years there... and have had my
"fun" with fire ants. My pest control guys said that the queens
are anywhere from 4-12 feet deep in the ground.... so killing
them takes one of those LOOONNNGGGG wands they use..

However, I found that if I disturbed their nests (ie- kicked
'em, dragged a rake through 'em, -that kind of "disturbed"),
they moved them... not always the best solution, but it got them
to leave from wherever they were... and take up residence
somewhere ELSE I didn't want them..

I also read that using Cream of Wheat is good.. laying it gently
on the month so as not to disturb them.. they take it to eat and
it expands when wet (in theory), and kills em..... I didn't use
this so I don't know..

Another think I saw done, was to take one mound (on a shovel)
and pour it on another mound... they fight to the death...
