I agree. It is often hot and usually dry here.  Water soaks immediately
into the ground and the surface will appear dry an hour after I have watered.
I noticed that my neighbors, whose place we cared for for a month while the
were on vacation, put sun shade mesh over their tomatoes, avoiding
some of the extremes of temperature. No splits.  My Brandywines seem prone
to splitting, in part because they genetically have ridges and in other
part because they are very large.  When they heat up in full sun on a 100
degree day for six hours, they go splitsville.  Amazingly, they are still
good under the healed cracked parts.
