Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I planted carrots earlier this year, before I learned about SQFTG. The soil
here is decomposed granite, so I supplemented with steer manure and peat
moss. Tomatoes and cukes have done well, but my carrots haven't progressed
beyond being one inch tall, the purple bean plants haven't gotten very big
and only had maybe six beans per plant (so far) and the bell pepper only has
one blossom. Have LOTS of small watermelons, though!
The next batch is going in a sqftg box, but I'm wondering what happened to
the first batch that made them fail to thrive? Since they sprouted --
although it looks like only maybe half of the seeds -- it's probably not the
seeds, right?
I'm thinking the answer is poor soil and operator error. Any other
suggestions, particularly re: carrots? I wish I had a gardening neighbor
around here, but I seem to be the only one, other than a guy with lots of
fruit trees. I have talked to the Master Gardener at the county extension,
and he's sent me some material, including a list of what to plant when for
this area.
Just got a nice check from my publisher, so I'm off to get Mel's book instead
of relying on the on-line archives and articles. Any other suggestions for
reading? I do have sunset gardening.
