Re: failure to thrive for some

Again I really hesitate to say anything because all of my information is
hearsay. I am new to vegetable gardening. I read in Sunset's Vegetable
Gardening, that it is one of the best cool-season growers. They said
different varieties are suited to various types of soils. They also said to
sow the carrots in spring and fall...although carrots can be grown in summer
with a fair degree of success except where extremely hot summers bake the
soil hard and dry.

They also said to plant in light to medium soil, in a sunny location. Soil
should be free of clods, and rocks, and should contain no fresh manure.
Those conditions cause split roots.

They went on to say "Most failures to get carrots started occur in warm
weather. It is difficult to keep the seeded soil moist. and crustless,
while seed is germinating. In small plantings a plastic sheet will do the
trick. Remove as soon as the seedlings emerge.

They went on to say "Fast growth is an essential for tender, juicy carrots.
To achieve this result, provide a light, rich soil, side dressings with
commercial fertilizer, and plenty of water. Another benefit of rapid growth
is the fact that the carrots reach maturity before being attacked by the
carrot rust fly, a serious pest in some sections, especially during warm
weather."

I know this is more than you were really interested in. I just read up on
them, because I just planted carrots myself. As usual, I found out all of
this AFTER I was done planting my first batch.

Oh well, I'll try again.
