Re: Compost!

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Other than worms, the usual suspects in poop are Salmonella and coliform
bacteria.

If you get heat, that'll typically kill off these bad guys; or if you use a
system with high biological activity, that will usually off them as well.
When in doubt, time is a great healer and cleanser....

In fact, worm composting in a flow through system kills off Salmonella and
coliform bacteria, and the final product is not susceptible to
re-inoculation, something that isn't always true for thermophilic compost.

For dogs on vermicides, the problem is that the vermicide has to be given
time to break down before you can feed it to your worm bin, or it will kill
your worms too!

I know of a company in Australia that sells a vermicomposting system
designed for dog and cat wastes, and they are planning a two tiered system
with a pre-composting tumbler unit and a flow thru style worm composter...

Vermicomposting of un medicated carnivore wastes has not yet been shown to
consistently destroy the parasitic worms, and for most people, such material
is best discarded and kept out of the compost pile.

However, if you are determined, a yard sale crock pot can be acquired, and
batches of the material 'cooked' to destroy all pathogens, and then you only
have odor control to worry about...

Frank--delivers the scoop, on composting dog poop....:-)
