I know what you mean about not being enthused about planting a fall garden..
It is hard to get out in the heat and humidity ( yes even here in
California, although I know it isn't what you are dealing with),  I planted
my one 2' by 8' plot right in the middle of my yard, because of the sun
factor, my gardeners (they mow the lawn)  just laugh at my "vegetable
garden"  but they don't speak English, so it is too much effort to try to
explain that Sq.. Ft Gardener say's too start small.

I have Garlic, Bush beans, Broccoli, Kale, Swiss Chard, Lettuce (several
kinds), Leeks, and Shallots, coming up.

This is the first winter garden I have ever planted, so I am really excited.
My husband said I will have rotting garlic, and shallots, and he is just
waiting for the rest of it to drown in the rains.

I am optimistic though, if nothing else, I have made my first attempt.
