There is a way to predict frost if you have the dewpoint forecast, but I'm
not expert on how that prediction goes. I wish someone would explain it.
One thing that riles me is that the Weather Service didn't get as large a
budget as it wanted, so it cut dewpoints out of its predictions. That will
screw the fruitgrowers and gardeners, for sure.
The other thing is, that gardeners should remember that the Weather Bureau
temps are calculated at about 5 feet above the ground. Cold falls. 34
degrees at 5 feet above ground may be 29 at ground level. Weather people
acknowledge that ground level temps are colder, but there had only been two
studies of that the last time I contacted the Weather Bureau. One had
ground level temp at 3 or 4 degrees colder, but the other had ground level
temp 6 degrees colder. I believe the latter. I live about 200 yards
(slightly downslope) from the Weather Bureau's main thermometers, etc., and
they've proclaimed the temp had falled to 38 degrees. My dead squash vines
said 32 or less. Margaret L
