Frost?

How can you predict when there will be a frost?  Can it be predicted based
on temperature, or are there other indications?  My tomato and pepper plants
are still producing like crazy and my watermelons aren't ripe yet.  I'd hate
to lose the vegetables to a frost, but I don't want to harvest the unripe
vegetables any sooner than I have to.
