My meteorology prof told us that you actually *can* predict
(somewhat) the evening low temp by looking at the dewpoint
at around 6PM. Within my limited observations, this does
seem to give an idea whether or not it'll freeze on a given night;
just watch the evening news! Your mileage may vary, of course.

Here in eastern Nebraska, we got a spate of record cold
last night. In Omaha, where I live, we got down to 34F,
tying a record that's stood since 1983.  I noticed that a number
of previous early frost records like this were set in years
that had nasty winters - 1934, 1982... That, plus the forecasts
I've been seeing for this winter, make me think I oughta get
out and caulk the windows pretty soon... :)
