Re: End of the season

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Juliana,
Considering you got a late start and you are in one of the warm zones,
timing may have been your problem with curcubits (squash, pumpkin and
cukes). The fact you got little or no fruit set, and what did develop
shriveled immediately indicates you had no pollinators--bees, wasps,
butterflies, other bugs. Next year, try planting two or three weeks after
your frost-free date, and plant wildflowers nearby. Any flower or veggie
that goes to flower will act as a magnet for pollinators. Your squash
plants will be swarming with bees, I promise! About powdery mildew. That
seems to appear later in the season when the dog days of heat and humidity
are upon you. So...planting earlier will help to avoid the mildew problem.
If it does appear, try spraying plants with 2 teaspoons of baking soda
dissolved in a gallon of warm water. If that doesn't work, use neem seed
oil spray. You can find that at garden centers under the name "Vegetable,
Fruit and Nut Spray" by GreenLight.
