That is a small rhizome of "iris pallida argentea varigata".  I planted several rhizomes of it there that were very small and hoped they'd grow.  Several didn't, but a few did.

Here is a pic of the first iris to bloom for me from seed.  Not my cross,
however - from seed sent to me by hybridizer Adam Mueller.  IB size plant
with large bloom.
