Re: HYB: Unusual Older looking seedling #2

Jan, thanks for the description.  It does sound quite unusual.  I share your love for the unusual!!  :-)

I agree totally - - about having those lovely irises that bloom the first year you receive them and then slowly die away, never to be seen again.  What I try and do with each of my crossings is to consciously make the effort that at least one of the parents are vigorous.  Now and then I'll cross 2 non-vigorous iris - only because occasionally they'll surprise me with a few irises that read "vigorous and healthy" all over them. :-)  I love those surprises.

Hi,

I thought I might have a picture of Mystery Time but I cannot find it on the computer or in my own picture files.  Here is the info from the checklist:

G. Plough - TB 37" ML   S. greenish buff-tan and barium-yellow, strong flush of red-violet; F. same base color with blaze of pastel blue-violet; mustard yellow beard.  Secret Storm x Cambodia  Intro. Eden Road p 1978

The growth sounds wonderful.  I am very tired of these beautiful new irises which do not grow, or bloom the first year and bloom out, etc.  Give me an iris which multiplies and blooms any day.

Hi Jan, I just ran outdoors to look. It looks to be a great grower; very vigorous. In it's first 2 years there are 16 increases (2 of those 16 plants have sent up stalks.  One stalk has finished blooming, the other stalk is now beginning to bloom. Too early to tell if more stalks will be coming up.)

Since Daughter of Stars and the rust colored seedling has reblooming parents - - possibly this one and/or some of it's siblings may rebloom too.

I know Jungle shadows, and Mysterious, but have never seen Mystery Time.  Would you happen to have a photo?

Margie,

Such wonderful colors for artistic arrangements at shows!  I'd love to work with them.  I used to have Jungle Shadows, Mystery Time, Mysterious, etc.for the same reason.  How well does it grow?

One reason I go backwards (on some crosses) before I go forward is because if I ONLY use the new that is already introduced -- - then most of the time I'll only be reproducing what is already introduced.  Often - what we see introduced is just more of the same.  I'm not saying that some really "new and striking" patterns are developing - there are. I'm only saying that I'd like to tap into some of the hidden past as well.

Now will I lose what I've found - by taking these forward?????........time will tell.

This cross is Daughter of Stars x (old form looking) Rust seedling (Vanity x Chief Hematite) I best describe this as the falls being an Olive Green blending to a purple center splash in the center of the falls.

Feel free to tell me what you think.
