Thank you, Donald.  That is the term I was trying to think of.  Some of my spurias looked like that a couple of years ago and I planted them and now cannot tell them from the rest of the spurias.

I think 'proliferation' is the term. At least for what's seen in your
photo, Jan. Not quite as sure of what I see in Christian's photo. I
had a bunch of frozen-out iris stalks do that last year. Some of those
proliferations that I fooled around with are good-sized clumps
themselves now, but I can't tell any will bloom this this year.
