Just another example of 'hopper damage. Many of the dead leaves are dead
due to chewing on the lower parts and retain enough green they aren't ready
to turn loose of the rhizome. Makes for a mess, but it only serves to give
the 'hoppers access to fresh plant material if they are removed. There are
some rhizomes here and there where the top has been cut at or near ground
level. The AB dormancy has the advantage of protecting them from being
'hopper food provided the dormancy sets in before the numbers of 'hoppers
build up to unmanageable numbers. 'Hoppers eat green foliage until it's
gone. After that most anything is chewable - window screens, mortar, woody
growth, dead debris. They tend to thin out rapidly when too much green has
been eaten. It's not fun to attempt to grow seedlings with 'hoppers around.
A mature grasshopper and completely eliminate a 3-4 inch seedling in a
couple of hours time.
