Thank you for your ID help anyway...I dont' believe these are older varieties...they were here when we moved here 4 years ago, and the lady that was here for 6 years before that, bought them from a neighbour, who started collecting newer and expensive varieties - I discussed these with her but she said to bring her a bloom in the spring and she may be able to tell me... she has over 200 varieties and growing! Anyway, may never really find out...but I like them and they are worthy of being in my garden anyway...and I did cross them this year and set seeds, so we shall see what we get!

Looking at Anna's photo and blowing it up to nearly full screen, I believe I do see a narrow edge of tan on the fall matching the color of the standards.  Also, at the larger image size a brownish overlay on the fall is not visible. The standards appear to merge into a blend of yellow and violet at their upper ends.  'Desert Canyon' does not have this blended look.
 
The fall violet pigment appears rather stronger than that of 'Desert Canyon,' and the hafts appear to have both a substantially different shape and a different pattern.  'Desert Canyon' looks more gold on a colored ground whereas  Anna's unknown has brown markings on a near-white ground.  I believe the differences are more than can be accounted for by difference in photographic equipment type, film and illumination, let alone possible differences in growing conditions and fertility.
 
It is almost impossible to identify an unknown with certainty unless you have the unknown growing side by side with the possible known cv under identical care and conditions.  Equally, it is nearly as impossible to say an unknown is not a certain variety if the two show strong similarities unless they too are grown side by side.
 
In any event, Anna, I have enjoyed seeing your photos.  You have some lovely irises whatever their names may be.
