Here are two discarded rhizomes beginning to put on fans. They are simply
lying on a thin film of water on gravel/clay soil in full sun. The water is
from a drippy faucet. One rhizome has been there about two weeks, the one
behind about 1 week. Both rhizomes were soft, but with age rather than rot.
They get lots of sun here. I'm not sure how they are taking up the water
unless it is simply by absorption through the tissues. The roots didn't
look very alive. But then, neither did the rhizomes. New roots are forming
under the fans. The one in back actually has five incipient fans - two on
the extension and three on the old rhizome. I'm not sure whether the
extension was from a bloom stalk or a dead fan, but it didn't have a growing
point when it was tossed. These are both arilbred rhizomes.
