I had such a pattern on 'Mahogany Muse' during it's maiden bloom. It was still beautiful the next year, but the cross checks/marks were gone.

Betty that makes sense.  Dr. Weiler did have beds of seedling beds around some of the walkways at the University.
Thank you so much.

This type of pattern can appear on MAIDEN bloom only---in my experience.  This means--the first bloom of a seedling.  I've had some gorgeous things happen in this stage, including impossible patterns, but know to enjoy as it won't be the same in following years.

Hello,

A lady wrote to Prescott Area Iris Society and they forwarded it to me.

Several years ago on the campus of Fresno State University in their iris garden I saw one with a checkerboard pattern in a soft brown and white.

I never hear Dr. Weiler speak of such an iris pattern not even in his seedlings.  Unfortunately the irises are long gone at Fresno State.

Anyone know of such an iris????
