You get this type of message when someone has the tracking feature of Outlook set to notify sender when the recipient of an
email reads it.  The recipient would either have to manual send a read message or have Outlook options to automatically send a read message to the sender.
 
There may be other programs that have tracking options but Outlook is one I know of.

Does anyone understand why, everytime the Subject line has    Read:    I cannot get anything.  I get an attachment which says WINMAIL.DAT (1kb).  No matter how I try to open it all I get is strange letters and symbols.  No readable messages, pictures, or ???

I seem to receive everything which does not have Read: in the subject line.  Only these are a problem.  I have been getting them for the last 10-12 days from several different people, including Steven Hill and Ross Spencer.
 
Thank you to anyone who can enlighten me or tell me how to open them to read what they contain.
