I'll let Gerry field this question.
Since I'm breeding for goof-proof Sino-Sibs I've been growing them under the
same conditions as the majority of my beardless including Siberians.
(Average but good sandy loam and almost as much water as the veggies.)
In the next generation, I'll force the weaklings out. >:-) (evil grin)
