Re: Pigment changes

This is not the type of pigment change i would
normally associate with a virus. I am not an expert on
such matters, but to me it looks more like the effect
of a chemical either in the soil or the air. The fact
that it appears to be localized doesn't eliminate a
soil bourne chemical change. Certain organic acids can
often intensify blue colorations or in some case turn
them pink. If your soil contains uneven distributions
of certain particles it is entirely possible for some
roots to distribute a different effective chemical to
different plant parts. one of my favorable school lab
experiments was to divide the roots of a Coleus (now
Solenostemon) and create a plant with different colors
alternating up the leaves. Whether this is something
comparable one can only speculate. of course another
possibility if it was only on this one fall that a
mutation had occured in the portion of tissue while it
was developing.
