RE: Please Help on tree ID

I've not heard of catalina cherry -- no surprise, seeing as how I'm on the East Coast. I checked out some images and had a "bingo!" reaction. Greengage plum ...maybe...quite possibly. I wasn't entirely confident about my suggestion of plum to begin with; OTOH those fruits do look like immature plums, and the leaves and the bark are similar to those I've seen on plum trees. Seems to me your most accurate way of determining ID should be empirical....I'm in favor of The Pie Test myself. Although I understand The Cobbler Test is also widely used LOL.

Thanks, Bonnie.  That is another possibility.  I am keeping a list.  Now I need to see how big the fruit gets and what color it turns.  I wouldn't mind having a green gage - they are nice fruit.

Thanks again,

Subject: [iris-photos] Please Help on tree ID

Hi All,

I know that we usually "talk iris" but I have a couple of mystery trees growing on my hill and would like to see if anyone can help me to id them.

We are clearing brush for the fire season and never noticed them before.  Probably because they look so ordinary and we never saw the fruit as it is the same color as the rest of the tree.

They are about 8 to 10 feet tall and currently have the fruit on them.

I am posting a photo of the tree and a closeup of the leaves and fruit.  All suggestions welcome.  At least it will provide a starting point for an ID.

Thanks so much,

Jan in Chatsworth
