Quite a strange bloom season, Mary Lou! Here
in my neck of Virginia, we, too, had an early bloom season, but the TBs came on
(and departed) so fast that all classes were blooming together. An
exception was sdlg 083F12, which came on late and whose 9 buds gave more than 2
weeks of bloom. Yesterday, as its last blooms faded, two SDB seedlings
were blooming.
There was also a phenomenon I've never seen here
before. Although almost none of my early and height-of-season crosses
took, the bees were having a field day. Almost all SDBs had pods, most
clumps having multiple pods, up to half a dozen. From one 21x3-ft bed, we
filled two large grocery bags with pods. Now, although it could have
been bumble bees, I saw no more of them than usual, this year. What I did
see were lots of honey bees -- a welcome change from the past many
years. -- Griff
