Hey there, Barb!

I'm glad you posted that photo of the marks on your stalk.

I just took a stalk to our Iris Show this last week, and it had the same marks on it that are in your picture.  I would venture to say that it could be a slug bite in the iris' leaves while the stalk was forming.  Or, it could have been rubbed by something abrasive while growing (like a fence, rock, dead weed stem, or a woody branch of some sort).

We've had an unusual spring here in Michigan, and to top things off, we had a pretty destructive hail storm 3 days before our show this past weekend.  (Yes, it was complete with 60 mph winds, too.)

Anyone else have an idea what could have happened?

My sister and I have discovered a couple of TB iris with a pattern of
marks on the stem just under the first branch on different! stalks.

There have been no bugs noticed in either area and the stem was not
staked. The top of the attached photo (with apologies for the quality)
is where the branch starts.

Any ideas welcome as to what might have caused the marks.

Thanks,
