I had this on a couple of stalks this spring. I was wondering what caused it also. We do not have slugs so it was not caused by that at my place. It was also not up against anything but out in the middle of the yard. So I'm interested to hear if anyone has experienced it and the possible causes. Hey there, Barb!
I'm glad you posted that photo of the marks on your stalk.
I just took a stalk to our Iris Show this last week, and it had the same marks on it that are in your picture. I would venture to say that it could be a slug bite in the iris' leaves while the stalk was forming. Or, it could have been rubbed by something abrasive while growing (like a fence, rock, dead weed stem, or a woody branch of some sort).
We've had an unusual spring here in Michigan, and to top things off, we had a pretty destructive hail storm 3 days before our show this past weekend. (Yes, it was complete with 60 mph winds, too.)
Anyone else have an idea what could have happened?
