That is what I've been doing over the past few years, Harold.  It just takes
so very long that way!  I've managed to identify perhaps 5 of the 30 or so
unknowns that I have.  There's an iris of IB or BB height, that looks much
like Wabash, that I've been trying for years to identify.  It spreads quite
fast, and can be seen in many prairie gardens.  I'd sure like to know the
name of it!

To have a reasonable degree of
confidence in the identify of a previously unknown is to grow the suspected
cultivar side by side with the unknown. When the two bloom at the same time
and the blooms and plants are virtually identical, then you have a
reasonable assurance of identity.
