I just received these two little irises in my shipment
from Arrowhead Alpines. I didn't expect to be able to
use them this year, but they came with flowers already
opening on them. What a happy surprise. So, I'm
collecting pollen for hybridizing later this summer.
I had grown rubromarginata and a purple flowered
mellita several years ago (from Terry Varner at Ohio
Gardens), but I only could keep them alive for a year.
I'm really happy with the hybrids I was able to get
from them, before they died. But, I sure hope I don't
kill these ones so fast!
The yellow one is Iris suaveolens var. mellita
(Archibald); the purple is Iris suaveolens var. rubromarginata.
