[PHOTO] Culture: Container Iris Gardening - ( Sandra )

All I do for winter protection is place four 1 foot wooden stakes in each corner of the container, then place burlap over the stakes and attaching the burlap to the containers with clothespins. See first photograph.

This procedure isn't done to keep the irises warmer in a Zone 5 iris garden, rather its done as a preventative measure should a rapid thaw in the spring follow a normal 40" of snow per Michigan winter. One winter did not place burlap over the containers and sure enough there were 3 days of 60 degree temperatures in late February resulting in standing water and ice blocks in the top 2" of the containers. See second photograph.
