This is a micro-pic of the standard of Joseph's
Coat at 100x. Known by most
as broken color, this effect is caused by a "jumping gene" or transposon
in
the carotenoid pathway. When the gene jumps
out of the pathway, color is
restored, this is also called a somatic reversion
since the gene reverts to normal.
The pic clearly shows the yellow carotenoid
granules at the top, and if you use
your imagination,
the white chromoplasts in neighboring cells. The dark stripe
cross the bottom is
a small vein. I'm wondering if the transposon isn't in the
cream gene #3 since the standards appear more cream
colored than white.
Preparation: lightly scraped surface with razor
blade, drop of tap water, cover-
slip firmly pressed. Black artifacts at top-left
are air.
