I got all kinds of interesting things sent to me in a gift box, back in 2001, including my first bunch of AB's.  None seem to fit this iris and I know for sure I've never planted any AB's in this nursery bed.
 
Maybe it's just another seedling that appeared from out of nowhere.  However, I'd always thought that clump's been there since I planted the entire bed back in 2001.  They get moved out after they bloom, and this one never did until last year.  I have 3 other clumps from back then that are just starting to bloom.  Can you say patient? 
 
The only other species iris I have, I've got from you, and all thankfully still have their labels.  I'm gradually switching over to copper labels on a 1 ft long piece of hanger wire, so they stay put.  But I have over 1000 diff iris, many with a backup clump, so it'll take a few years to switch them all over.
 
Anyway, if you want a piece to grow and solve the mystery, it's yours.

Also definatly not pumilla.

Pumila does not have a stem. Flower comes straight off of rhizome with a long floral tube. When you have a seed pod, it sits directly on top of rhizome.

Also definatly not a Pumila type of flower, standards way too  long.

Did you get any aril breds  or aril species at any point in time?

I was also sent several diff pumilas - Bazak #4, Bulgaria and Cretica, but thought they'd died.  I can't find pix of any of them to compare.

I'm not familiar with this cultivar, allthough have  several dozen aphyllas here.

The  standards  are much longer then  the usuall aphylla.

How about plant picture, and photo of flowering stalk?

Due to a labelling mishap in 2001/2, some of my iris have lost their id, as I never saw them bloom before their labels went missing.
 
This iris is one of those, but it's been in the same spot in one of my nursery beds since 2001 and just decided to bloom the last few years.  Looking back over my iris list from 2001, I'm wondering if this could be I aphylla var Romanian?
 
It's camera shy too.  I've tried all day to get a decent picture, but this is the best I could do.
