HYB:101:Basics

Is it cool enough to start winter classes, yet??

Could we do a series of these, like HYB:101:Branching, and HYB:101:Red Beards, etc.?  I think it would be great fun and something good to have in the archives?

I'll start by passing on a couple of the things I've learned over the past 18 years. I'm definitely NOT an expert, since I've not studied genetics. My intention is to get the ball rolling. And I'm hoping some of the REAL hybridizers will contribute to the threads.  Questions are allowed too!

1. This one is mandatory!  Hybridizing should be fun.  Otherwise, it becomes work and people like grinning Bill won't want to do it!

2.  If your intention is to JUST have fun?  Go to it.  Cross anything that strikes your fancy and enjoy the results.

3. If your goal is to achieve (anything) spend the time to do research. The current discussion about the online data base is what prompted me to begin this thread.  The data base can greatly shorten the time it takes to do this research.  (I've yet to apply most of this myself . . . did I mention that I can't find my pass word?)  What took me several winters buried in books, catalogs and R & I's can be shortened to a few busy days/nights with the data base.
