Will, today the thread is more informative than Animal Planet! Linda, those pictures at the Ag site are amazing. It's assumed that the 'stinging' nature of all the caterpillars is for protection. What doesn't make sense to me, is why Mother Nature gave many of those caterpillars some beautiful colors... almost as if there is an invitation to seek out and touch! When my kids were small, it was always a fascination to capture the 'wooly bear' caterpillars... they were big, fuzzy, and harmless. Great for science projects in school. They were just brown or black, nothing like some of these beauties. Kitty Loberg
