With a really dense canopy of weeds surrounding and overtopping the
irises, it's fairly easy to lightly spray the outer canopy of weeds
without getting any on the iris leaves. I just point and spray over the
top of everything. A light spray, not enough to run and drip. Damage a
future bloom or two now and then, but when it's this big a mess, I don't
care.
Once weed canopy is knocked back enough that I can walk between the
rows, I use a home made spray shield made out of a liter cola bottle
which helps keep the spray where I want it to go.
It's important not to spray when there is <any> breeze and use a
somewhat coarse spray rather than mist - bigger droplets don't travel as
far.
One of the reasons I "prefer" millet as dominant weed is because it
seems to reduce/eliminate other weeds and is <very> sensitive to
Roundup. The part of the rows that were mostly millet are now pretty
clear with a nice straw mulch between the rows where I've trampled it
down. Irises tolerate the Millet canopy well, tho with all the rain
this year, it got really out of bounds!

Major mess where crabgrass and knotweed have taken over.. will have to
weed by hand to get rid of knotweed..
