Re: Louisiana iris seed germination

Adrienne,

Joe advise is good.  However, all may not germinate the first fall and if you keep your pots in shallow water you may get some more of the seeds to germinate in the spring and some the next fall and spring.   If your seeds have dried out they are probably still good; however, they are harder and slower to germinate.  Soak them in a jar of water with a tight lid with no air space for several weeks before planting and then handle as recommended below.  Just remember, the dried seeds will be slower to germinate, so you may want to keep the pots for several years before discarding.

Adrienne,

The first trick to getting LA's to germinate is not to let then dry out.
You harvest the seed pods just when they start to yellow and the seeds are
coffee cream tan. Than chip the cork on the end where it was connected to
the pod exposing the inner seed. Then plant all the seeds from the pod in a
six inch plastic pot covering them, about 1/2 in. with good potting soil
with plenty of peat.(Miracle Grow). Put the pot in shallow water so the
water will absorb to keep the seeds moist but not sopping wet.. they will
germinate in three to four months. In Louisiana the time table is: pollinate
through April. Harvest seed pods around July 4 seedlings pooping up Oct.
Nov.

I hope this helps you
