Re: I. cretensis not
Hmm.... prior to last year, I don't recall getting seeds from my Iris
cretensis. They've bloomed every year since I got them in 1998, but
last year was the first time I collected any seeds. Perhaps I passed
along Iris cretensis seeds that I got from elsewhere? I don't remember.
Anyway, it's kinda funny (for me) that this happened... because it
exemplifies the frustration I've had with sowing mislabelled seeds,
and that it prompted me to create the species database way back in
the 20th century. LOL. Only this time I guess I was the cause of
the frustration, rather than the recipient!
To my eye, that's gotta be some kind of Siberian.
If you want some Iris cretensis that really came from Crete, I can
send you some starts later in the season. They're totally hardy
outdoors in Z6. Mine are blooming now... almost continuously for 2
weeks straight, and still going strong. Woo hoo!
Dennis in Cincinnati (where I. odaesanensis started blooming today)
PS: I'll check my old emails & notes to see if I can scrounge up any
info on those mysterious seeds I sent.
