Re: Gynandriris sisyrinchium

Jim,

Thanks.

I guess I should have gone out in the rain late yesterday afternoon and checked it. The second bud was still closed in the morning, but the flower was spent when I went to look at it today.

Hello Ken, I haven't been foolish enough to try it here. This is what the Pacific Bulb Society says about it. I am not fond of flowers that are only open briefly.

Moraea sisyrinchium (syn. Gynandriris sisyrinchium) is native to the Mediterranean region and flowers mid to late spring. The plant pictured below was grown from seed and always flowers much earlier than the one illustrated under it. Flowers don't open unless the day is warm and often not until late afternoon and they do not last very long. But each plant produces a number of flowers. The first photo by Mary Sue Ittner was taken early March 2004 and the second one was taken by Bob Rutemoeller of a form that blooms later in the spring from Marettimino (?) Island. The last two photos were supplied by Jamie Vande taken mid-April in his Cologne garden of bulbs obtained from Lauw de Jager. They open around 16:00 in the afternoon and are very short lived.
