Re: Iris albicans

Years ago, we were told not to grow any multi-coloured tulips anywhere near lilies, just in case.  Some years, it rains so much, some iris blooms get streaks, but it's from the trees dripping on them.  In dry years, those same iris are fine.

Aside from occasional leaf spot, iris rot is a problem, mainly after late spring frosts, and too much rain, like we had last year.  I had iris rotting long after they'd already bloomed.  I wasn't paying attention soon enough, as rot's usually only a problem early in the season, not later, so I lost a few.

Since the lily beetle has finally made its way west, I'd best keep an eye out for the iris borer next, yikes!

El,

I've always been warned, but never had it.  I've been importing a lot of iris plants over the last couple of years and take it I picked it up from an otherwise healthy looking rhizome.  I need to learn more about viruses in general, just which ones attack which plants.  We all live happily with tulip break viris, as it doesn't kill the plants or make them unsightly.  I wonder if global warming has any effect on their distribution?  Probably indirectly, via their vectors; aphids and company.

I did buy some Muscari macrocarpum last year that have all come up virused!  I have them in a pot, thus isolated, and hope to get some seed.  Seed is where it's at!  For species, anyway.

Sorry about the virus, Jamie.  I don't think I've ever seen it on an iris, just on a friend's lily.

Mark,

this is one iris I can't keep going. It likes it hotter and drier than I can really offer. Funny, as I have good success with aril types, but i do tend to pamper them, despite trying to give them a hard time. if a plant wants to hang out in my garden, just great, but over pampering doesn't make for 1) easy gardening and 2) good plants for hybridising.

My first buds are appearing on TBs, meds and arils. Unfortunately, I am seeing virus on more than a few plants. Hate it!!! Isolate and incinerate time.
