Re: Iris tectorum

Yes, the soil here is more alkaline.  To grow my few JI's, I built a pseudo bog garden about 10 years ago, filled with a lot of peat moss.  Most of the beds here are at least slightly raised with topsoil mix added.

I do grow around 50 or so siberians and 30 spuria, but my collection is mainly bearded iris, mostly median and dwarf.

Snow cover here is usually good, at least 2 to 3 feet, although some years a hard frost hits before we get snow, and the losses go up.  On the other hand, if the snow melts too early, spring frosts cause losses as well.

Everything's looking pretty fine this year, even after 2 days of below 0C temps, but they're predicting 2" of snow for later today, just as I notice my new graminea is coming up, sigh.

Mark, As for Iris tectorum - I don't know the answer to the ones I planted in Lancaster, NH. I lost the two I planted here in Berlin. They bloomed for two years and then nothing. Very discouraging. We hope to move out of these mountains next year.

El and I probably would have different garden-worthy irises - my soil medium is very acid like most of the east with abundant rainfall which is great for Japanese and Siberian irises and some species. El and I probably share the same short growing season because of our long and bitter winters with northern New Hampshire having snow cover six months of the year.  Don't know if El has a consistent snow cover.

I am going to try growing more iris in pots.
