Mark, That happens! I doubt that you have a hybrid. There is only one registered hybrid, Little Caillet, between these two series. I was a cross between a tet LA and I virginica. Supposedly, the cross has been repeated but those irises never came to light. I've tried and never gotten it to take. My guess is that when the genetics are done on the LAs, the result will be similar to that of the PCIs and the Oncos. That is, genetically they are so similar as to constitute a single species. "Species" is a human construct, lines that we've drawn to distinguish between groups of plants. Those lines may not mean a lot to the plants. Rod From: Mark A. > Actually, I'm not so confident in the recognized species in the group. The lines blur! Rod, Dennis, For some reason both your messages got spammed, and on my occasional check I found them. What I am wondering is that in Florida for instance, depending on location, the species found are I. brevicaulis, I. hexagona, I. fulva, I. giganticaerula, I. virginica, and I.
pseudacorus. I. pseudacorus is naturalized in a small area in the extreme northern panhandle. I am wondering if some of the Irises found in Florida may be natural hybrids of one or more of those species. Maybe my plant is a natural hybrid between Iris virginica and Iris hexagona? Both species are found in a swamp about 15 miles from here. Mark A. Cook b*@bellsouth.net Dunnellon, Florida. |
