Thanks, Jamie and Sean. Oron Peri on the SRGC forum suggests Iris potaninii, and I find that quite convincing. I will check references against the plant to be sure. I had it in my head that I. potaninii was violet, but it seems yellow forms are the more common. I found several pictures of it from different web sites that match my plant extremely closely.
