I have killed this before, but I'll have to try it again. On a related note, it looks like all three of my Iris japonica clones survived the winter, including multiple pieces of each in two different microclimates. The plants were mulched heavily with silver maple leaves. It was below -10°F (-23°C) on multiple nights and -17°F (-28°C) one *entire* night, with at least a foot of snow cover. Many of the leaves were killed back, but not the bases of the fans. Even one of two canes on a tall form survived. These were all planted in the fall just a few weeks before the ground froze, so they weren't even well-established.

It survived another Winter and this was a tough one for Kansas City. Lowest was only  -11ºF but we dipped below zero many times and had very little snow. It did die back to ground level and only about half the plant has green shoots. Fingers crossed it flowers again this year.
