Hmmm. My zip code, which is only four miles wide, apparently straddles Sunset Zones 41 and 39. Their online Plant Finder informs me that the cactus Coryphantha vivipara (which grows well here) can be grown in Zone 41 but not in Zone 39. Zone 41 crosses USDA hardiness zones 4a through 6b (-30 to 0°F lows) and areas with average rainfall from 25 to 50 inches. I'm not sure that's any more useful than the USDA zones!
