RE: Deer Repellant - Daylily buds

It's always interesting to here new Deer repellant ideas, I'll give this a
try - hope it works in the desert.

It's also interesting to here the differences in the progression of the
seasons from place to place. I haven't seen a daylily in quite some time
now. Even the very late ones are long since done. There is one that
sometimes flowers from April till September, but this year it is long since
done. 'Stella de Oro' and some of the other "everbloomers" have put on two
waves of flowers this year, and their seed pods from the second wave are now
splitting open, but no flowers right now, maybe some more soon, since the
August cool down has been noticeable this year (not too many days much over
90, which is rare in August here; not a single day over 100 F so far this
year; a good summer so far, it's even been raining occasionally. Right now
it's 10:00AM, no clouds, and just 74F; that's just weird, but it feels
nice.).

Janice,

Deer started eating daylily flower buds about 2 weeks ago, here. I
watered my seedling rows and mother plants with egg water and
there's been no further damage. I'm going to water them again,
today, after a week of wet weather.

I used one egg / 4 liters water. Four eggs stirred into a couple
watering cans did about 4 - 40' rows worth, including a short part
of a row of lettuce and beets. I've used the egg water on the
lettuce and beets 3 times in the last six weeks and no deer
damage, no discernable taste when eaten.

This is the first time deer have bothered daylilies so early.
Before they've waited until near the first frosts and have nibbled
seed pods which I then harvested immediately. If the egg water
continues to work I'll wish I would have tried it a few years ago.
